Guest Post: Sinan Shi talks #SESBigData

Sinan Shi, Research Software Developer at University College London, was among the invited guests at SES’s Big Data event. He recaps the day and reflects on the benefits of reaching out of researchers of different disciplines.

Big data is probably the one of hottest terms being used in recent years. The scientific community is one of the first communities to become aware of the challenge and opportunity in big data. Data will play a more and more crucial role in the future of scientific research. In this workshop, instead of talking about the details of big data techniques or general big data solutions, we go back directly to the problems that originated from individual research projects.

“It is crucial to let young researchers know about the current achievement of big data and be inspired by it” – Sinan Shi, Research Software Develop, University College London

The workshop covered content from ocean depths to “the beginning of the universe”, as quoted by one of the key speakers. Indeed, the SES big data event provided a great opportunity for young researchers coming from very different backgrounds to meet with each other, network and talk about the common issues and solutions concerning big data from their research. Data seems to be the ever-strong link among various disciplines of scientific research. It is crucial to let young researchers know about the current achievement of big data and be inspired by it. It is even more important to let them realise that the big data challenge is a matter of every researchers and we have to work together.
